Michael
Pollan has a wonderful rule of thumb to follow when it comes to
purchasing and eating food: "If
your grandmother or
great-grandmother wouldn't recognize it as food, don't eat
it."
Think about all of the "kiddie" foods we buy; pop-tarts, fruit snacks,
cereal with marshmallows in it, etc.
Are these really food or some laboratory-engineered
concoction?
I think your great-grandmother would agree with the latter definition!
Being a smart shopper means
reading labels, knowing where your
food
comes from, and not letting slick marketing make unhealthy decisions
for you and your family. There are additives and
dangerous ingredients put into our food supply cleverly
marketed to us and our kids. Sadly, some of these products
are best sellers. Why? Because these companies are
betting that we are not smart enough to read labels, don't have the
time, or simply don't care.
If we don't buy these products that are making us unhealthy, the
companies will be forced to change what they manufacture.
More
people are paying attention to what they consume, but there is still a
long way to go.
Please join us as we help each other along the way to greater health
and well-being!
