What the Recycling Codes on Plastics mean:

Avoid:

#3 V-Vinyl or PVC-Polyvinyl chloride:  One of the worst plastics for leaching hormone-disrupting phthalates and other toxins into food, drinks, and the environment.

#6 PS-Polystyrene:  Common in take-out containers and disposable plates and coffee cups; may leach toxic carcinogens.

#7 Miscellaneous:  Found in some baby bottles, water bottles, food containers;  unless stated otherwise, the hard, polycarbonate varieties probably contain BPA.

Safer:

#1 PET or PETE-Polyethylene terephthalate:  Safe for single use.  Please recycle!

#2 HDPE-High density polyethylene:  Low risk of leaching.  Easily recycled.

#4 LDPE-Low density polyethylene:  Shopping bags and others may not be recycled curbside, but maybe at your  grocery store, Walmart, or drop-off location.

#5 PP-Polypropylene:  Used for most bottle caps and some straws and bottles; Generally safe and may be accepted for recycling.
