Environmental
Toxins "Although
ignorance is bliss, knowledge is empowerment."
As a safety-conscious parent, you've installed the locks on the
cabinets and outlet covers and baby gates. You're up on the
latest nutrition information and feed
your little one only the most
nutritious foods. You've created a safe and healthy
environment
for your child to grow and thrive. But what about that
"deodorizer" you just sprayed? How about those leftovers
you're
heating in the plastic container in the microwave?
When we think of toxins in our environment, we think of smog and
polluted water. We overlook the hidden dangers right in our
homes. Sadly, for many children, their homes are
full of toxins. We're not talking about children living in
poverty, but children living in homes which may appear adequate, clean
and safe. What you can't see are the toxins in the air, the
water, the manicured lawn, the freshly laundered clothes, the
sparkling clean bathtub, the shampooed carpet, or the furniture which
smells like a "mountain breeze". It is a fact that children
today
have high rates of allergies, asthma, etc. Some doctors
believe
that a major cause of these problems is the growing number of toxins in
the environment. Children's developing systems react to the
bombardment of these chemicals by develping chronic health problems.
As more people get informed and spread the word to educate others about
the chemicals and toxins that are polluting the Earth and making our
children unhealthy, government and companies are being forced to change
the way they do business. The message is clear: we
will not allow our children to suffer while big business and government
debate for years over whether or not they should change regulations.
Parents must look out for the next generation and protect them.
When it comes to
childrens' health and welfare, we can't wait for the FDA or EPA to tell
us something is dangerous. Common sense will tell you that
toxic chemicals will have some sort of a detrimental effect on those
exposed, especially little ones whose systems have not yet matured.
Unfortunately, slick marketing tactics are used to fool
consumers
into buying products labeled "natural" or "green", which
actually
may be neither! Many products don't even have to
list all
ingredients.
We must be proactive and change our purchasing habits because when
enough people refuse to buy toxic products, the tides will change; big
business will be forced to change their ways. Looking around
the stores lately you can tell that we are getting the message across,
slowly. But there's still work to do.
Environmental Working Group ("a research
organization
based in Washington, D.C. that uses the power of information to protect
human health and the environment") has launched an interactive
site for information about the
Kids-Safe Chemicals Act; much needed
and overdue legislation to help protect our children. You
will
also find scientific information and great articles about protecting
your kids and yourself from toxins lurking in your home.
