We had a campout with extended family at Watkins Mill. With
seven kids (six under age five) to keep up with, we didn't take as many
pictures as we would have liked. This park is great for families.
Adults and kids will enjoy the
visitor's center, woolen mill, Watkins home, and 1870's living history
farm. The mill is a National Historic Landmark and is
the only 19th century textile mill in the country with its original
machinery still intact.
Wiiliams Creek Lake offers several places for fishing and a
swimming beach. Unfortunately, due to the amount of rain the week
before our visit, the beach was closed. A nice place for a bike
ride is the 3.75 mile paved trail which circles the lake. Birds,
whitetail deer, and turkeys may be seen throughout the recreation
areas. An equestrian trail is also available.
Our campsites were 63, 64, and 65. These were huge, level,
and had plenty of trees. They were also right near the restrooms,
which is always good with little ones. Like most sites at Watkins
Mill, these are electric. Several basic sites located at the
front of the campground are next to the lake, trail, and park. We
attended an interpretive program in the evening which included great
information about amphibians. We even learned to identify
different frogs by the sounds they make.
